Abstract

This study investigates the social actions of young people both in terms of motives and actions of those who are members of an interfaith community in Yogyakarta called the Young Interfaith Peacemaker Community (YIPC) and how hybrid potraits of identity play a role in shaping the character and perspective of individuals in the community. A number of scholars who have researched the religious behaviour of young people in Indonesia have often highlighted the conservative-turn and radical tendencies. It is for this reason that this research focuses on examining young people who choose different paths and strive for peaceful narrative and the search for social harmony. This qualitative study uses an interpretive phenomenological approach and the data collection techniques apply the methods of observation, interviews, and documentation. The main argument of this thesis is that the motives behind their movement to narrate the values of tolerance include three things: micro-individual, meso-community and environtment (family), and macro-social politics. Several mapped motives are a collective awareness, imagined common enemy, and claims to youthfulness. Another finding is a portrait of the fusion of their thinking (horizon) with the horizon of the community and the reality around them, thus giving birth to a hybridization of identity among them. This can be observed from a series of socio-religious expressions among youth who are active in the interfaith community in Yogyakarta.
