Abstract

The background of this research is based on the decline in the quality of education in Indonesia, one of which is caused by the lack of professionalism of teachers in carrying out their duties. In an educational institution, professional teachers must of course have four core competencies, namely pedagogical competence, personal competence, social competence, and professional competence, so in producing professional teachers it requires management efforts of a principal in improving the competence and professionalism of existing teachers. This research will be focused on one of the educational institutions, namely Madrasah Tsanawiyah Assalam in the city of Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara. The purpose of this study is to describe how the principal management efforts to improve the competence and professionalism. The method in this research uses qualitative research methods with the type of case study research. The research subjects in this study were principal leadership management and teacher competence and professionalism. The research techniques used were interviews, observation and documentation. The technique of presenting data begins with the stage of data education, data presentation and verification and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the principal management's efforts in improving teacher professional competence were divided into four, namely: (1) The principal made a policy specifically for teachers such as teacher functional policies, teacher competency improvement policies, teacher recruitment policies, and teacher welfare policies. (2) The principal makes three programs consisting of a daily program, a monthly program, and a program each semester. (3) The principal has a strategy that aims to improve pedagogical competence, personality competence, social competence and professional competence of teachers through all existing policies and work programs. (4) The condition of professionalism of the teachers at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Assalam is proven from several teacher achievements in maximizing the four core competencies such as pedagogy as evidenced by the ability of a teacher to manage the entire process of learning from beginning to end, personality competence is evidenced by the nature and daily behavior of the teacher in carrying out the process. learning, social competence is evidenced by a harmonious relationship between teachers, students, and the community, the professional competence of teachers is proven by the completeness of learning tools owned by the teacher before starting learning
