Abstract

This research is motivated by mild mentally retarded children who have an IQ level of 50-70. Children who have the ability to be trained and given skills as provisions for them after graduating from school, but in reality the children have not been able to master the skills that have been taught by the teacher that have been programmed by the school as a form of achieving mutually set goals. The purpose of this study was to determine and explain the implementation of the principal's strategic management and the impact factors on increasing the independence of mild mentally retarded students in SLB Negeri 2 Yogyakarta. This type of research is qualitative descriptive analytical, using a phenomenological approach. In data collection, the authors used the methods: (1) observation, (2) documentation and (3) in-depth interviews. Data analysis used analysis techniques which included three activities, namely: data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions or verification. As for testing the credibility of the data, the authors used the data source triangulation technique. The results of this study indicate the following: first, the principal in planning makes internal observations so that he will know the strengths and weaknesses of the institution. Then hold a meeting to formulate what the school should achieve. After that create a program that must be run to achieve the goals that have been set. Evaluation is carried out by deliberation as a material for improvement of the program that has been implemented. Second, the selection of strategic management in achieving school goals is a decision and action that results in the formulation of implementation plans designed to achieve organizational goals. It is possible to identify, prioritize, and exploit existing opportunities, can minimize the consequences of unfavorable conditions and changes, and can push thoughts into the future. Third, the impact of implementing strategic management in an effort to increase the independence ofmentally retarded students mild, namely: (1) for schools, school goals will be more structured and planned (2) for parents, reducing the burden on parents at home and (3) for mild mentally retarded children, he will be able to take care of himself, take care of himself, have skills as a provision for him after graduating from school.
