Abstract

This research was conducted and motivated by the importance of developing cognitive and language abilities from an early age. Because basically the growth and development of children cannot be separated from the development of brain structures. Therefore, one way to develop cognitive abilities and language skills in children is to do brain exercises. Brain exercise which is a series of simple movements that are very well applied to solve learning problems in children and can make it easier for children to learn. Brain exercise is a stimulus that can be given to children so that cognitive abilities (learning and problem solving, logical thinking, and symbolic thinking) and language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) can be developed properly. RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan has implemented brain exercise activities in their schools as a form of teacher effort in developing children's abilities in learning both from the aspects of students' cognitive and language abilities. This research was conducted at RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan Semester I in the academic year 2020/2021. The objectives of this study were 1) To find out that brain exercise is said to be able to develop cognitive and language abilities in early childhood at RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan, 2) To determine the process of implementing brain exercise at RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan, 3) To determine the impact of exercise brain on cognitive abilities and language skills of early childhood at RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan. This research uses qualitative research with a developmental psychology approach and a case study strategy. The data obtained came from several informants, namely, the principal, teachers, and children. The data obtained from the results of observations, interviews and documentation. This research is qualitative in nature, so the data analysis used is inductive. This means that from pre-research to the end of research carried out in schools so that they can obtain complete data and can make conclusions from field observations. The results of this study are: 1) Brain exercise is said to be able to develop cognitive and language abilities in early childhood because brain exercise can stimulate the workings of the brain and maximize brain function. Brain exercise can also overcome learning barriers in children. Both when children learn and solve problems, think logically, think symbolically (aspects of cognitive abilities), as well as learn to read, write, speak or communicate and listen when other people speak or provide explanations (aspects of language skills). 2) The process of implementing brain exercises at RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan has been included in the learning design in schools. Brain exercise activities are carried out once a week, which is only on Monday for 15 minutes due to government regulations regarding the Covid 19 outbreak which limit learning activities in class and carried out in the classroom. The implementation of brain exercise activities at RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan uses 4 stages of movement, namely ECAP, E for energetic, C for clear, A for active, and P for positive. 3) The Impact of Brain Exercise in Developing Early Childhood Cognitive and Language Abilities at RA Rahmah Elyunusiah II Medan, namely: for cognitive abilities, brain exercise can help children overcome learning disorders problems so that children return to their enthusiasm for learning and focus when participating in the learning process at school. After doing gymnastics, the child's logical thinking develops. Children recognize the difference between right and left. By doing brain exercise, the child's memory is developing, it is proven that the child is able to calculate the tempo of the movement and the names of the movements in brain exercise. For language skills based on the child's listening ability during brain exercise activities, it shows that the child is able to listen well to the directions given by the teacher. It is clear that the children are getting more enthusiastic about the lessons. With enthusiasm, the child is increasingly confident in answering questions from the teacher. When the teacher asked the children about their opinion about brain exercise, the children answered compactly very happy.
