Abstract

This study exists from the relationship between the Sunni and Shia who have different theological approaches, especially in the study of hadith. Among the Sunni and the Shia, they have their own classifications and both sides sharply criticize each other, until they disbelieve in each other. However, it is undeniable that in the authoritative book of Sunni hadith there are narrators who come from the Shia. In the most authentic books of Sunni hadith (such as Shahih Bukhari and Shahih Muslim), there are also some narrators who come from mubadda’un, especially the Shia narrators. As Imam Bukhari who became the teacher of Imam al-Tirmidhi, Imam al-Tirmidhi certainly also narrated the same thing. From here, the researcher is interested to study on the history of Shia found in the book of hadith of Sunan al-Tirmidhi, departing from two basic questions: (1) How the biography and jarh wa ta’dil narrative indicated as Shia in the book of Sunan al-Tirmidhi? (2) How is the narrative built by the narrator indicated as Shia in the book of Sunan al-Tirmidhi? To answer these two questions, the researcher will use the methods of data reduction, data presentation, and giving conclusions offered by al-Mizzi in his book ‘Tahzib al-Kamal’ and Ibn Hajjar al-Asqalani in his book ‘Taqrib al-Tahzib’. The researcher is also uses the conceptual approach of Jarh wa Ta `dil and the critique of sanad, thus requiring biographical tracking of the books of Tabaqah. From this concept, it can detect the credibility of the narrator indicated as Shia, Tasyayyu’, Ghulat, and Rafidhi, as well as the researcher analyzes the narrative of the hadith brought by the narrator of Shia. The author take some steps to find the names of the Shia narrators in "Pelaku Bid'ah dan Pengaruhnya" by Dr Ahmad Isnaeni in book Jarh wa Ta'dil. In that book, there are data of heresy perpetrators listed in Sunni authoritative books. After that, the writer take a note for the hadith by the Shia narrator through the Mausuah al-hadith and other hadith applications. Then, the writer found some scholars' comments through a book entitled "Jarh wa Tadil". Last but not least, the author concludes about the quality from Shia narrators in the book "Sunan al-Tirmidhi" However, the researcher does not mention the whole related to the history of Shia in the book of Sunan al-Tirmidhi, the researcher only limits this analysis to ten narrators. The conclusions of this research are: (1) The researcher limits the ten narrators, such as Abban bin Taghib, Hakim bin Jubair, Muhammad bin Fudlail, Tsuwair bin Abi Fakhitah Sa’id, Uthman bin Umair, Yahya bin Isa bin Abdur Rahman, Nuh bin Qais, Abad bin Yaqub, Ziyad bin Mundzir, and Umarah bin Juwain, (2) The comments of hadith scholars related to Jarh wa Ta’dil on the history of Shia are not all rejected, but most of hadith scholars reject the hadiths narrated by the Shia, (3) There are Shia narrators who disbelieve the companion of prophet Muhammad (PBUH), (4) There are narrators from Shia who are not so fanatical, Shia Rafidhi, and Shi'ah Ghulat, and (5) There are 42 hadiths from ten narrators of Shia in the book of Sunan al-Tirmidhi.
