Abstract

The thesis entitled "Human Liberation in Hassan Hanafi's Progressive Theology" is a research conducted to liberate humans from all forms of confinement caused by classical traditional Islamic theology. As is well known, theology today tends to divide people. This is motivated by the understanding of Muslims on the hadith about the survivors (al-firqah al-najiya). Based on this understanding, each group tries to give a claim to the truth of their group and label it heretical, heretical, and even lead to disbelief in groups who have different thoughts with them. Therefore, according to Hassan Hanafi, the perpetuated theology must be transformed into human values and unity. Without this transformation effort, humans will always be in a stagnant and underdeveloped condition. So human liberation in traditional Islamic theology becomes a must for mankind. This research is included in the type of library research using a philosophical historical approach. The historical approach is used to analyze the biographical data of Hassan Hanafi and data related to classical Islamic theology. Meanwhile, a philosophical approach is used to analyze the essence of Islamic theology, which is then answered in two ways, namely an in-depth investigation of Islamic theology and an examination of the nature of Islamic theology for human life. Through a historical approach, it is found that classical Islamic theology basically only provides a focal point for a perfect God, and in its development, theology tends to divide humans rather than create a science or bring about unity in mankind. Meanwhile, through a philosophical approach, it was found that the essence of theology is essentially a reflection of the development of the times, thus theology at this time must be able to be a reflection of its era as well, and transform theology which is a reflection of the classical period into the present day. For Hassan Hanafi, today's theology must make humans the central point of everything, so that human freedom will be realized and human civilization will advance. In addition, all forms of traditions that develop in traditional theology such as dogmatic texts, and sterilize reason must be abandoned to a theology that sees the reality of mankind more and makes reason (ratio) as a means of achieving truth.
