Abstract

Independence needs to be instilled in students as a provision to face challenges and developmental tasks in adulthood. The more often students solve their own problems, the greater the chance for students to develop independence. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and independence in students who work and do not work. In addition, it also aims to determine the differences in independence between working and non-working students. The subjects in this study were 160 college students in Yogyakarta, consisting of 80 working students and 80 non-working students. The method used in this research are Simple Regression and Independent Sample t-Test. The results of the analysis show that there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and independence in working and non-working students, with a correlation of 0.721 with a sig of 0.000 (P <0.005) and an effective contribution of 0.520 (52%). Then, there are differences in the independence between working students and non-working students, with a t-test of 3.813 and a significance of 0.000 (P <0.05), which means that working students are more independent than non-working students.
