Abstract

Understanding Christian missions and Islamic preaching cannot be separated from the historical context of the encounter between the two religions. The history of the encounter between the two religions makes Christian and Muslim parties always deal with each other. In Indonesia, Islam's suspicion of Western interference arises behind Christianity, which is considered to be trying to subdue Islam and make Muslims become apostates. On the other hand, Christians view that Muslims want to impose their religion on the Muslim world. This shows that the two religions are trying to be on guard against each other. One of the cities that played the most role in meeting missions and da'wah was Banten, which were coastal cities that became international trade routes. Initially offering under the control of the king of Sunda, most of them embracing Hinduism, then came the religion of Islam which influenced Banten so that it grew into Islamic kingdoms. The next period Banten was the arrival of Dutch imperialism which brought the mission of Christianization. The answer to the problem or research objective to be achieved is to know the history and phenomenon of the spread of Islamic Da'wah in Banten, to find out the history and phenomenon of the spread of Christian Missions in Banten and to determine the effect of the meeting between the Mission and Da'wah movements in Banten on the existence of other religions (transformation). The method used in this research is historical method or historical method. This historical method uses literature study documentation study with the main data source for research is qualitative type data. The findings of this study are the spread and phenomena of Islamic Da'wah in Banten developed due to the expansion of Demak through trade and marriage to Banten people who embraced Hinduism, the spread and phenomenon of Christian Mission Da'wah in Banten came together with the arrival of the Dutch colonialists, inviting Banten residents who were mostly religious Islam to follow the path of Jesus and the meeting of Islamic and Christian da'wah created social conflict and because the Christian mission was brought together with the colonialists, its existence until now in Banten is very lacking, while the existence of Islamic da'wah is very large with the large number of Islamic education institutions in Banten.
