Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that has emerged in all countries around the world seems instantly to have an effect on public health, particularly adolescents. People are confronting challenges in identifying, recognizing, assessing and using information to manage their health. Ultimately, public information channels are also dominated by fake news and fear due to the considerable uncertainty of information, and adolescents challenge an important role in this as part of e-media users. This study aimed to identify the eHealth literacy skills of adolescents in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta and it’s complex relationship with e-health information seeking behavior and compliance of health protocols in houses of worship during the COVID-19 global pandemic situation. This research was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design applying an online survey approach in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta from August to November 2020 with 300 adolescents aged 15-24 years as the selected sample. eHealth literacy was typically measured using 8 questions (constructs) and compliance to health protocols in places of worship was measured using 9 questions. Data were analyzed descriptively and used path analysis models. The results of this study show that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of adolescents were studying online, and more than half of adolescents were on the internet to look for health information multiple days a week. Adolescents identified as having good ehealth information seeking behavior were more likely to comply with health protocols in the houses of worship than adolescents with less ehealth information seeking behavior (b=0.77; 95% CI = 0.271.27; p- value=0.002). eHealth information seeking behavior had a significant positive effect on compliance in implementing health protocols in houses of worship only if it was preceded by a good level of ehealth literacy (b=1.05; 95% CI=0.53-1.57; p-value=<0.001). Compliance in implementing health protocols in the Covid-19 pandemic situation in houses of communal worship is significantly affected by the typical pattern of ehealth information-seeking behavior. Adolescents who typically have an excellent level of ehealth literacy are more likely to have good ehealth information-seeking behavior.
