Abstract

This thesis entitled "A Review of the Sociology of Islamic Law About Wives as the Backbone of the Family in Tegal Kembang Hamlet, Imogiri Village, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta". Tegal Kembang Hamlet is one of the hamlets that produces quite a lot of handicrafts, such as cotton crafts, wedang uwuh, herbal godok and so on. The craftsmen in Tegal Kembang Hamlet are mostly done by women or wives. Besides doing it as a craft, it is also an income because it is the backbone of the family. If the wife becomes the backbone of the family, it will definitely have an impact, both positive and negative. Therefore, further research is needed on what are the reasons for wives to be the backbone, what is the social impact and how to analyze the sociology of Islamic law on this phenomenon. This type of research is field research by directly visiting the location of the phenomenon of the wife as the backbone of the family, then the authors use an empirical sociological approach. While the data analysis method used is descriptive analytic. In the data collection method the author uses the method of observation, interviews, and documentation. The sociology of Islamic law sees this phenomenon as a new social change but does not violate existing Islamic legal rules. Like Tugiyem and Sri Utami who became craftsmen as well as the backbone of the family, but still did not leave their obligations as wives, namely taking care of the household. Meanwhile, Mugiati and Tri Mulyani, who are widows, have become their obligations as the backbone of the family, but they still carry out their duties as housewives in educating their children. This phenomenon is in accordance with Islamic law which regulates the rights and obligations of a wife. The results showed that the phenomenon of the wife as the backbone of the family in Tegal Kembang Hamlet is a habit that has been around for a long time. This is due to the aim of reducing the burden on the husband, the difficult economic conditions while the number of children and the single parent status. The phenomenon of the wife being the backbone of this family has both positive and negative impacts on the wife's personality, family and the surrounding environment. The positive impact is to change the paradigm of society and at the same time prove that not all wives rely solely on their husbands. This is evidenced by the wives in Tegal Kembang who have little income but are still able to survive and support their children. Meanwhile, the negative impact is the lack of participating in social activities and taking care of children because more time is spent working. The sociological analysis of Islamic law on this phenomenon is a social change that becomes a new order, but in accordance with the times and Islamic law that governs it.
