Abstract

The research of biodegradable plastic based sweet potato starch with addition eggshell as filler and glycerol as plasticizer was conducted. The purpose of this research is to discover the effect of adding eggshell as filler and glycerol as plasticizer on mechanical properties, water vapor transmission rate, functional group and biodegradability for plastic. Mechanical properties tests include thickness, tensile strength, elongation and modulus young. The results showed that biodegradable plastic with eggshell as filler produced thickness of 0,256 mm, tensile strength of 4,75 N/mm2, elongation of 25,11% and modulus young 0,73 N/mm2. Biodegradable plastic with glycerol as plasticizer produced thickness of 0,252 mm, tensile strength of 4,75 N/mm2, elongation of 15,20% and modulus young 0,73 N/mm2. WVTR test showed that the addition of eggshell with variation 0,0; 0,5; 1,0; 1,5 dan 2,0 g could decrease WVTR and the addition of glycerol with variation 1,0; 1,5 dan 2,0 mL could increase WVTR. Biodegradability test showed that biodegradation rate of biodegradable plastic with glycerol faster than biodegradable plastic with eggshell in 12 days.
