Abstract

This thesis examines the dynamics of the lives of Muslim transgenders to obtain the legality of their gender identity. This research contributes in order to develop theoretical studies in understanding the existence of transgenders as minorities and their relation to negative stigma. This study used a phenomenological qualitative method which was carried out for six months. Data collection in this study used interview, observation and documentation techniques. Interviews were conducted with eleven transgenders, from three transgender organizations in Yogyakarta, both as members and administrators of these transgender organizations. Observation was carried out intensively in relation to transgender activities both inside and outside the organization's secretariat. Finally, data collection with documentation is from various printed and online documents, especially related to this research. This research shows that, discrimination against transgenders stems from family rejection of transgender gender identity. The efforts made by transgenders in dealing with such discrimination are to use self defense mechanisms of rationalization and compensation. A form of transgender rationalization is to acknowledge that their gender identity is innate, while the form of transgender compensation is to not dress up like a woman with a reason to maintain the good name of the family. This research also shows that, transvestites individually cannot assert their identity in the public sphere, then this effort is carried out on an organizational basis, namely the Kebaya Foundation, Iwayo, and the Waria Al-Fatah Islamic Boarding School. This identity negotiation is carried out by making advocacy division, providing training in the form of skills to transgenders to be able to work in sectors that are more receptive to the community, participating in commemorating holidays, participating in providing assistance to people infected with HIV and AIDS (ODHA), providing education through seminars or discussions, collaborating with various universities and religious leaders, creating an internal institution, the Family Support Group, with the aim of negotiating transgender identity into the public domain that their religious identity is recognized.
