Abstract

The background of this research problem is that ideally education can give birth to human characters. In the goal of national education, it is clearly written that the purpose of education is one of them forming human character and noble character. To realize human character and noble character, many efforts need to be done, one of which is through the Five Day School program as an effort in Strengthening Character Education. The Five Day School program and Strengthening Character Education programs must be managed properly in schools in order to realize the goals of education. The problem in this research is how the principal management in managing the five-day school program, how to implement the strengthening of character education through the five-day school program, how the strategies pursued in improving the strengthening of character education. This research was conducted to determine the principal's management in managing a five-day school program as an effort to strengthen character education in elementary schools in the city of Yogyakarta. This research is a field research, using a qualitative approach, by taking research samples at SDN Tegalrejo 1, SD Muhammadiyah Suronatan and SD Taman Muda Ibu Pawiyatan Tamansiswa. Data collection is done by conducting observations, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used include data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of this research are: 1) School Principal Management in managing the Five-Day School Program is carried out through planning and carrying out in every aspect of management namely HR, infrastructure, finance and public relations. 2) Implementation of the strengthening of character education through the five-day school program is carried out by means of a family-based, class-based, school-based, and community-based approach. 3) the school's strategic effort in improving the five-day school program in strengthening character education is through optimizing 8 national education standards, namely content standards, process standards, graduate competency standards, educator and education personnel standards, infrastructure standards, management standards, financing standards, and assessment standards.
