Abstract

Founded before Indonesian independence, Universitas Islam Indonesia, has been subjected to remarkable dynamics since its establishment. As an Islamic university, it is constantly faced with the demands of modernity on the one hand, but on the other hand it is compelled to maintain its identity as an Islamic university. It this therefore interesting to study the dynamics and strategy of UII in maintaining its Islamic identity as a model for how Islamic universities manage to survive and even flourish amidst the onslaught of external civilizations. This research was conducted to find the construction of Islamic identity of UII, how the shift in Islamic identity occurred, and the dynamics and strategies to strengthen UII's Islamic identity. Using a historical approach and historical research methods, this research examined documents on the establishment of UII, reports from the Chancellor, reports on the Foundation, and books on the history of UII as the main data sources. All data were collected and analyzed using historical research analysis. The results of this study indicate that the Islamic identity of UII has been constructed even prior to the establishment of UII, and this identity was crystallized in the spirit of the founder. The Islamic identity of UII has at least been constructed since its inception (1945) to 1960. The following years was entailed with the strategies to maintain and strengthen the constructed Islamic identity. Overall, UII is characterized by seven Islamic Identities: (1) The Islamic identity of UII is the meeting point of various existing Islamic traditions and thoughts, without any domination of any particular Islamic tradition, since it stands above all traditions equally; (2) Islamic identity of UII is a form of opposition and dissatisfaction with the existing situation, which serves as a mediation between two educational institutions in Indonesia (the pesantren tradition and conventional education). In other words, it represents Islamic Identity, which leads to a spirit of resistance to obstinacy and injustice; (3) Islamic Identity of UII is a meeting point between science and religion (Islam) as a project of ideas that are continuously being fought for; (4) Islamic Identity of UII is used as a basis for preparing the leaders of the ummah and nation; (5) Islamic Identity of UII was born from the spirit of renewing education; (6) Islamic Identity of UII was born from the spirit of modernization; and (7) UII was born with a spirit of worship and struggle. The journey of UII is broadly divided into three periods: First, the ideological period and the construction of Islamic identity (1945-1960); second, the organizational transition period (1960-1994); and third, the period of modernization and strengthening of Islamic identity (1994-present). The dynamics and strategies of strengthening Islamic identity are indicated by the shift from partial to systemic pattern. Islamic values become an organizational paradigm and Islamic guidance is comprehensively conceptualized in the form of the Ulil Albab curriculum. Based on the stages of development of Muslims according to Kuntowijoyo, the development pattern of UII grows from an ideological stage to a scientific stage.
