Abstract

This study aims (1) to determine the quality of the TUG-K instrument based on the results of Rasch modeling (2) to identify understanding of straight motion kinematics for candidate physics teachers by using the Test of Understanding Graphs in Kinematics (TUG-K). This research is descriptive research. This research involved 203 students of Physics Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, UIN Sunan Kaliaga Yogyakarta who had studied the kinematics concept of one-dimensional straight motion. An understanding of the concept of prospective teachers was obtained from 20 multiple choice questions that were adopted and modified from Robert J. Beichner and semi-structured interviews with candidate teachers. Interviews were conducted with 10 teacher candidates who were randomly selected. Understanding the concept is known through the results of data analysis based on the answers of candidate teachers who are analyzed using Rasch modeling and the results of interviews between researchers and candidate teachers. The results showed that based on the Rasch model the quality of the questions was good and feasible to be used to test the understanding of the concept of candidate teachers. The difficulty of candidate teachers lies in the concept of velocity where candidate teachers must choose a speed chart based on a position graph or determine a graph of a statement, and determine a statement from a graph. As many as 92% of prospective teachers still answer questions wrongly. The concept that is considered easy is to determine the speed based on the position graph, 66% of prospective teachers are able to answer the questions correctly the item measure obtained is -1.75, the MNSQ infit is 0.94, MNSQ outfit 0.92, PT measure corr 0.40.
