Abstract

Al-‘Arābiyyah Baina Yadaik book which was compiled for non-native Arabic learners contains cultural values and ideology of the Arab community. The existence of “both” in this book needs to be given the attention remembering the role of Al-‘Arābiyyah Baina Yadaik book as a “tool” that has a positive and negative potential in influencing students. On one hand, the cultural aspects of Arab society are important because they can provide pragmatic competence, while ideological aspects imaged with the Salafi ideology are considered incompatible for the climate of Arabic language education in Indonesia. Therefore, this research intends to examine the cultural and ideological values of the Arab community transmitted in Al-‘Arābiyyah Baina Yadaik book. This research uses the literature method with the material object Al-‘Arābiyyah Baina Yadaik book. While the formal object is related with cultural values and ideologies of Arab society, and Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory. All research objects were obtained using documentation techniques. The content analysis (content analysis) is a technique used to examine and answer the formulation of the problem in this study. The results of this study indicate that: 1) The cultural values of Arab society contained in Al-‘Arābiyyah Baina Yadaik book based on semiotic Roland Barthes consist of: a) Collective culture, it is characterized by the existence of cultural expressions aimed at maintaining relations with other people, emotional connection is important, and brainstorming puts group opinion higher than individual opinion; b) Culture of high power distance, it is marked by the understanding of favoritism and the existence of community conventions related to the norms of state life which are reflected in the existence of bureaucracy; c) High context culture, it is characterized by the placement of non-verbal language as an important component in the process of communication or interaction; d) Polycratic culture, it is characterized by the tendency of people to be flexible with time; 2) The value of ideology Salafi contained in Al-‘Arābiyyah Baina Yadaik book based on semiotic Roland Barthes consist of: a) the prohibition of man teaching female students and women teaching male students; b) Prohibition of women wearing trousers that are considered to resemble the pants commonly used by men; c) The absolute ability of polygamy, which considers that the necessary situation and justice is not a legal requirement for the law in polygamy, but only limited to religious conditions.
