Abstract

Batik liquid waste containing remazol red dye and organic compounds can cause damage to the aquatic environment and is toxic. This research was conducted with the aim of reducing the concentration of remazol red dye and COD content in batik wastewater by coagulation and adsorption methods. The coagulant used in this study was moringa seeds and the adsorbent used was humic acid. Moringa seed coagulant and humic acid adsorbent were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrophotometer to determine the functional groups. Coagulation using moringa seed coagulants carried out variations in acidity in batik liquid waste with a pH of 2,3,4,5, and 6. Adsorption using humic acid adsorbens is carried out variations in virtue at pH 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The optimum result obtained from the process of coagulation and adsorption, carried out a combination of coagulation-adsorption processes. The results of the FTIR characterization of papaya seeds after coagulation showed a shift in the wave numbers of the OH, N=N, and C-O groups, humic acid after adsorption showed a shift in the wave numbers of the C=O, OH, and C-O groups. Optimization of the pH of the remazol red dye solution in the natural coagulation of Moringa seeds occurred at pH 4 and was able to reduce the remazol red dye by 91.24% and could reduce the COD concentration by 82.18%. pH optimization using humic acid adsorbent adsorption occurred at pH 2 and was able to reduce remazol red dye by 69.94% and COD value by 67.71%. The combination of coagulation-adsorption was able to reduce the dye remazol red by 97.90% and was able to reduce the COD value to 97.90% in batik wastewater.
