Abstract

The manufacture of rubber fruit shell activated carbon with various concentrations of KOH 1 M, 2 M and 3 M to reduce the levels of COD, BOD and TSS in the adsorption of tofu liquid waste. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of KOH concentration on the quality, characteristics and adsorption ability of rubber fruit shell activated carbon to reduce COD, BOD and TSS levels in tofu liquid waste. Rubber fruit shell activated carbon was carried out by carbonization method using a furnace at a temperature of 500 ˚C for 4 hours and immersion in 1 M, 2 M and 3 M KOH for 24 hours. Parameters of ash content and moisture content of activated carbon of rubber fruit shell activated by KOH all variables did not exceed the quality standard of SNI 06–3730-1995. The results of characterization using FTIR showed the presence of aliphatic C-H groups, C=C and OH. The results of characterization using SEM showed that activated carbon of rubber fruit shells activated by KOH 1 M, 2 M and 3 M had a rough and porous surface. The results of determining the surface area using the methylene blue method showed that the largest surface area was 861.7795 m2/g owned by activated carbon KOH 2 M. The results of the adsorption test on tofu liquid waste showed that the optimum results were obtained in adsorption using activated carbon activated KOH 2 M with a decrease COD, BOD and TSS levels were 81.31%, 80.54%, and 57.5%, respectively.
