Abstract

The type of electrode can effect the electrical potential and efficiency of the Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). This study aims to determine the difference in electrical potential and decrease in waste levels in the MFC of Ambon banana peel waste using graphite electrodes (MFC-Bantonite Banana Peel (C/C) and aluminum (MFC-Bentonite Banana Peel (Al/C). Parameters used is current (I), voltage (V), and power density (W) as well as a decrease in the value of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) of waste. The anode chamber contains the substrate of Ambon banana peel waste and the cathode chamber contains 0.1 M KMnO4. The results of the experiment for 44 hours of operating time showed that MFC-Bentonite/Banana Peel (Al/C) produced a higher electrical potential. The highest current strength in MFC-Bentonite/Banana Peel (Al/C) is 10.1 mA, the highest voltage is 1.18 V, and the highest power density value363.7703 mW/cm2. In MFC-Bentonite Banana Peel (C/C), the highest current is 1.65 mA, the highest voltage is 0.21 V, and the highest power density value is 11.70608 mW/cm2. A greater decrease in COD and BOD was found in the MFC-Bentonite Banana Peel (C/C) system, namely 9865.31 mg/L and 4833.997 mg/L. At the MFC-Bentonite/Banana Peel (Al/C) electrode, the decrease in COD and BOD was 9326,548 mg/L and 4570,007mg/L. The T-test result for the mearsurement parameters of current strength, potential difference, and calculation of power density resulted in significant difference, because p<0,05. The significant difference in this parameter means that there is an effect on the use aluminium elektrode for MFC.
