Abstract

The religious life in adults is believed to be unchangeable because adults experience less turmoil than when they were younger. However, recently there has been a phenomenon called “hijra” where many adults, especially college students, massively improve themselves spiritually in order to get closer to The Creator. This study was conducted to determine the process of spiritual transformation of students who went through hijrah, initiating and inhibiting factors, and changes after spiritual transformation. Qualitative method with a phenomenological approach is used in this research. Three informants from STAN, UMY, and UIN Sunan Kalijaga were interviewed and observed for the process of collecting data. The results of this study indicate that the informants undergo a spiritual transformation phase of neglect, meeting, and change. In the neglect phase, the informants are in a phase where they do not live their lives based on religious foundations. Informants are still indifferent to religion, tardy in praying shalat , and have emotional problems. In the meeting phase, the informants found insight or enlightenment that made them try to get closer to the Creator. After that they went through the phase of change, where the informant experienced physical changes, emotional changes, become more diligent in worship, experience changes in relationship with the creator, and also interpersonal changes. The initiating factors in the process of spiritual transformation are internal factors, such as innate desire to become better people and external factors such as family, friendship, organization. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors also come from internal and external; which are the feelings of boredom and laziness, as well as family and friendship circles.
