Abstract

Majelis Taklim (Islamic Forum), which serves as an integral part of Islamic education and the Education System in Indonesia, has been playing a key role in educating the community to improve their religious belief and piety as the leading religious community. Surprisingly, there are only few studies to address non-formal education based on the Majelis Taklim for Women, due to lack of serious attention from the academic communities on this issue. Majelis Taklim is merely considered a natural part of social activity that, is managed voluntarily, as part of da’wah and thus, has not attracted much attention from researchers. Research on non-formal education based on the Majelis Taklim for Women can raise the activities of the Majelis Taklim for Women that have developed widely in society through the academic perspective. This is a qualitative field research with a multisite study design and a modified descriptive analytical method. This dissertation raises three main points as the research object, namely: first, the implementation of standards for non-formal education management based on the Majelis Taklim for Women in Yogyakarta City. Second, the implementation of recitation materials in non-formal educationof Majelis Taklim for Women in Yogyakarta city in the perspective of the epistemology of bayānī, burhānī, and 'irfānī. Third, the implementation of nonformal education activities based on the Majelis Taklim for Women in the city of Yogyakarta with the perspective of prophetic social science. This research addressed five Majelis Taklim for Women in the city of Yogyakarta as the research subjects: 1. Pengajian ‘Aisyiyah Subdipaten Wetan and Ngasem, 2. Pengajian Khodijah Pasar Beringharjo, 3. Pengajian Kartini, Jetis District and Kampung Sitisewu, 4. Pengajian Raudlatul Jannah Muslimat NU Yogyakarta City Branch, and 5. Pengajian Al-Wardah (WSI-KBWUCY). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The qualitative data were analyzed using the Miles and Hubermen model which was carried out interactively and continuously, until it was completed, and the data was saturated. The data collection was subsequently followed by the following three data analysis after the researcher completed thedata collection: data reduction, data display, and verification/drawing conclusion. The theory as the theoretical basis for the analysis is adopted from the theory of Islamic education by ‘Abdar- Raḥmân an-Nahlawi, Ahmad Tafsir, and Syahidin, the theory of non-formal early education by Nuryanis, Khodijah Munir, Helmiwati and the Guidelines for the Majelis Taklim from the Ministry of Religion. The theory of material analysis uses Al- Jabiri’s epistemology and the Majelis Taklim’s activities were analyzed using Kuntowijoyo’s prophetic social science and AsmaenyAzis’ prophetic feminism. The findings and data analysis conclude the following points: 1. The Majelis Taklim for Women in the city of Yogyakarta has met the management standards of non-formal Islamic education, although it is still far from perfect; 2. the preachers have presented the materials using a comprehensive bayānī, burhānī, and 'irfānī approaches with different topics and developments; 3. Pioneering community empowerment activities have been carried out through historical activism, the pillars of humanization, liberation, and transcendence.
