Abstract

The research background is spirituality and intellectual assets are considered as two dimensions that are equally needed by students in the midst of the onslaught of modernism, hedonism, and the decline of national morality or nationalism. This is important because of intellectuality without spirituality leads to inner dryness and national spirit erosion, therefor radicalism and extremism emerge from the campus environment itself. In the end of all, the campus environment became the main contributor in creating radical-extremist groups, because of the lack of spiritual development and too strong an academic-intellectual orientation. This type of research is a qualitative field research. Researcher has been involved in the MATAN organization and active in interacting with members and administrators of MATAN. Data were collected by three techniques; interviews, documentation, and observations. In approaching the object of research, the researcher has used a phenomenological approach. The findings of research are; First, MATAN was established from the start to work on students, who are currently facing a spiritual crisis due to the onslaught of hedonist-pragmatic modernism. This spiritual crisis has resulted in an imbalance between the lack of fulfillment of spiritual needs and the dominance of the intellectual aspect. MATAN as JATMAN's wing is engaged in creating spiritual development programs that are oriented towards balancing the fulfillment of spirituality and intellect on the one hand, and for the sake of growing nationalism on the other. Second, the programs organized by MATAN are weekly, monthly, and yearly programs. There are readings of ratib, awrad, dhikr, and scientific discussion assemblies. Meanwhile, the regeneration uses the Suluk method, as an important part of the tarekat in general. Third, the output given by MATAN to its members is very obvious, especially in increasing spirituality and intellectuality. Spirituality guides the intellectuals of members, and intellectuality then supports the spirit of nationalism. It is the driving force of resistance to propaganda by radical-extremist groups in the campus environment. So that, MATAN becomes an important element of strengthening spirituality in the campus environment, in order to produce intellectuals who are useful in overcoming national and religious crises.
