Abstract

This research aims to identify the strategies carried out by volunteers in order to improve the literacy of coastal communities in West Kalimantan through the presence of a Community Reading Park (TBM), called Tansal Reading Village. In addition, the research investigates supporting and inhibiting factors that play a role in the process of improving literacy. This research was a case study using a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Further, the data were collected from two main sources. The primary source was the research participants. Then, the secondary source included books, online news, and social media such as Instagram, Youtube, and Facebook. The data were collected using several techniques, covering observation, interview, and documentation. After that, the data were analyzed by firstly managing and preparing the rough data and reading the whole data. The analysis continued with describing themes to be presented in a descriptive narrative that was embedded with excerpts from the participants. Finally, the data went through an interpretation process. Data in this research was validated by taking notes and recording events during the research to keep the data credible and reliable. Further, the researchers triangulated the sources and methods, increased persistence in research, extended the research process and performed a member check. As mentioned earlier, the present research focused on improving the literacy of coastal communities in West Kalimantan through the presence of TBM Tansal Reading Village. The research then formulated two research questions. The researcher found out several strategies employed by the volunteers to improve literacy in the reading village. The first strategy was doing communication with various parties such as the village government, university students, and the community of Tanjung Saleh Village. Second, the volunteers conducted read & count coaching. After that, they made use of learning media. Then, they acquired or added the library book collection. Fifth, the volunteers used promotions in the digital era. Finally, they held the Fun Smart Sunday program (Ahad Cerdas Ceria). Several supporting factors improved the literacy of the coastal communities. First, there was support from the village government especially the village head who permitted to transfer book collections in the village library. Following that, there was the active involvement of volunteers who motivated children to read, study and do other activities. Finally, there was also support from other stakeholders. However, the volunteers were facing inhibiting factors such as time, legality, and long distances.
