Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of parents in controlling the use of gadgets on early childhood, the reasons or motives of parents to give gadgets and internet to early childhood and to find out the impact parents have on allowing their early childhood children to use of gadgets and internet in the Sapen area of Demangan Yogyakarta. This study is qualitative research that took the location at Sapen area of Demangan, Yogyakarta. Sample of this study are 11 people; they are six childhoods and five parents of these early childhoods.Data collection techniques used were interviews and documentation. Data were analyzed by reducing, displaying and drawing conclusions. Verifying the validity of data in this study uses triangulation technique. The results of this study are: first, there are differences of roles of parents in controlling the use of gadget and internet in early childhood in the Sapen area of Demangan, Yogyakarta. Then, there are differences among father, mother, and guardian of early childhood. Also, there are differences between fathers who work from morning until evening, from morning till night and from morning to late at night. Likewise the role of mothers, there are differences between mothers who work as housewives and mothers who also work outside the home. In general the role of mother/guardian of early childhood are more dominant than father in controlling the use of gadget and internet. It is because they have more time with children compare with fathers.Second, parents' motives in the Sapen area of Demangan village in Yogyakarta provide or allow early childhood to use gadgets and the internet there are 8, namely xi as a means of playing and entertaining children, as a means of counting children, pleasing children, calming children, persuading children to obey their parents' wishes. child bedtime, as a means of learning and increasing children's knowledge, and as a means to communicate between parents and children. Third, the impact felt by parents from the use of gadgets and internet for early childhood in the Sapen area of Demangan Yogyakarta village has 3 categories, namely parents do not feel any impact, both positive and negative due to gadgets and the internet, negative impacts tend to be more dominant than positive impact, and positive impact is more dominant than the negative impact.
