Abstract

Identity negotiation is a communication activity in an intercultural context to show the identity of an individual or group by respecting other cultures. Cultural disfferences motivated by ethnic, ethnic, racial and regional differences encourage individuals to negotiate identities to reflect on each other’s culture and even the personality of a group as experienced by students at the Ulul Albab Islamic Boarding School. Misunderstandings that occur at the Ulul Albab Islamic Boarding School often lead to confilicts, one of which is the lack of knowledge of language and cultural understanding. This study discusses how the process of negotiating the identity of Sundanese and Javanese ethnic students in intercultural communication at the Ulul Albab Islamic Boarding School Balirejo Umbulharjo Yogyakarta. This study aims to determine the process of negotiating the identities of Sundanese and Javanese students using descriptive qualitative methods with data collection through interviews and in-depth ddocumentation with research subjects and using Identity Negotiation Theory. The subjects involved were 5 students and 1 village head of the cottage as triangulation informants. The results of this study indicate that the object (Sundanese and Javanese students) carries out the identity negotiation process in undergoing intercultural communication with fellow Ulul Albab student. The identity of the object in the study has a variety of identities even though it is dominated by one cultural identity. Identity negotiations carried out by the subjects (Sundanese and Javanese students) require an understanding of each other, one of which is by menas of adaptation, namely by feeling understood, feeling of being respected, and feeling of being affirmative values.
