Abstract

This research is motivated by the leadership role of the principal in the process of strengthening character education which still tends to be ignored. This is because the principal is seen as a party who does not have direct interaction with students as the subject of a character education program. Whereas the principal is a vital figure who determines the direction of school policy is taken. This study aims to answer the urgency of the principal's leadership through a spiritual leadership model in the process of strengthening character education. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a naturalistic type. The key informant was the principal of Al-Azhar Elementary School, Syifa Budi, Samarinda. Data was collected using semi-structured in-depth interview techniques, observation, and documentation. For data analysis, using the approach popularized by Miles and Huberman which consists of 3 (three) phases, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that: 1) the principal's spiritual leadership model at SD ASBS is built on the internalization of vision, alturistic love, and hope and belief (Hope/Faith); 2) strengthening character education of 5 (five) priority values carried out in the form of examples from school principals and teachers, as well as habituation in daily activities at school; 3) the principal's spiritual leadership model has a positive effect on school program innovation, motivation for all school members, the establishment of effective communication patterns with parents of students, and the involvement of community elements
