Abstract

Multiculturalism, especially in Islamic boarding school with non-formal education backgrounds, is expected to be able to solve problems to minimize the conflict gaps that occur in Islamic boarding schools. The understanding of multiculturalism has to be able to provide students awareness on conflicts that occur in Islamic boarding schools are not a good thing to be cultivated. Furthermore, education have to be able to provide intellectual offerings among others by designing materials, methods, and curriculums that are able to rely on the importance of mutual tolerance, respect, ethnic, ethic, and cultural differences within the environment. This research is motivated by differences in the geographical location of the two pesantren, the Nurul Islam Islamic boarding school is located on the island of Kalimantan and the Binaul Ummah Islamic boarding school is located on the island of Java, namely the Special Region of Yogyakarta, culturally the pesantren is plural or (Plural) in terms of ethnicity, culture, race, and education background. This diversity, of course, will be able to cause problems such as small frictions. teaching multicultural education from an early age in Islamic boarding schools is a must. So that, a bigger impact does not occur in the future that related to ethnic issues. There are three formula of this problem. First, what are the multicultural values in the Nurul Islam Islamic boarding school. Second, what are the multicultural values in the Binaul Ummah Islamic boarding school. Third, how is the multicultural comparison in those Islamic boarding schools. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research, data sources obtained using research include documents, and extracting information. Data collection techniques is done through observation, interview documentation and the data analyzed by data reduction to draw conclusion. Researcher tried to explored Multicultural Values in Islamic Boarding School education (Comparative Analysis of the Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding School and Binaul Ummah Islamic Boarding School) with comparative analysis to find the differences and similarities of both Pesantren. The result show that there is a similarity of both Pesantren are: the boarding schools are both together applying multicultural values from the aspect of values, recognizing diversity (plural), respecting equality, tolerance, justice, and humanity (humanism). The implementation of multiculturalism in both Islamic boarding schools are prioritized Islamic teachings as a foothold in instilling an understanding of pluralism in a cultural frame. In addition, Islamic boarding schools as a pillar to counter radicalism and terrorism through instilling the values of love for the homeland (NKRI). The values taught in Islamic boarding schools cannot be separated from teaching students about Islam Rahmatan lil‟alamin. Besides, Islam provides benefit to everyone to give a message of peace and tolerance in respecting differences in culture, ethnicity, race, and educational background. . The multicultural values which contained in multiculturalism in Islamic boarding schools are recognizing the diversity in Islamic boarding schools environment. For example, the differences in culture, ethnicity, and race. Furthermore, students are taught to respect equality with all students such as, freedom of speech in terms of expressing opinions and as well as respecting the existing culture. Tolerance is seen from togetherness during activities such as, mutual cooperation and mutual respect. Humanity provides a guarantee to protect students from different cultural backgrounds. Besides, all of whom have to defend and fight for humanity. The purpose of multiculturalism in both Islamic boarding schools is to instill the character of students based on morality and politeness. Those are taught for all students in a very early period when they came in the Islamic boarding school. All students in both Islamic boarding schools are all treated equally without any discrimination in terms of educational background, whether those are rich or poor. This goal is applied for creating an independence student. Besides, a good practice of multiculturalism will not cause social jealousy in Islamic boarding schools.
