Abstract

Interpersonal communication is considered the most appropriate to help the formation of independence. The use of a good communication approach between caregivers and foster children at the Ulil Albab Orphanage in Yogyakarta allows for an effective exchange of information, resulting in a pleasant social and emotional situation. With the formation of a good situation, then in the process it is very helpful in building the independence of foster children. This study aims to determine how the interpersonal communication used by caregivers for foster children in the formation of foster children's independence. And what are the supporting and inhibiting factors of interpersonal communication built by foster children in the formation of independence at the Ulil Albab Orphanage Yogyakarta. This study uses a descriptive type of research with a qualitative approach. The results showed that the interpersonal communication process carried out by the caregivers of the Ulil Albab Orphanage was carried out well through a humanistic perspective of devito which became the basis for determining the attitudes of the caregivers to foster the independence of the foster children. The humanistic perspective includes openness, empathy, supportive attitude, positive attitude and equality. Researchers also found results regarding factors supporting the implementation of interpersonal communication in shaping student independence, namely strong desire, activeness, communicator, openness. While the inhibiting factors for the implementation of interpersonal communication in establishing the independence of foster children are the behavior of foster children, inappropriate family parenting patterns that cause foster children to become spoiled, and uncontrolled use of technology.
