Abstract

The study aims at elaborating and analyzing the role of Applied Islamic Science paradigm as a guide for the development of science and institution of IAIN Kudus in ‘market oriented versus humanism’ frame in education. There are four questions to answer in this study. 1) After institutional transformation, why is Applied Islamic Science as IAIN Kudus paradigm revitalization essential and strategic? 2) What is the AIS concept as a scientific paradigm? 3) How does the academic community respond and apply AIS in response to the world of work challenges? 4) With AIS paradigm concept in hand, how does IAIN Kudus respond the industrial revolution 4.0 opportunities and challenges to maintain its existence? This case study is qualitative in nature. The data obtained by observation, in-depth interview, and document analysis were processed and analyzed in six steps, i.e. transcribing the interview, coding, categorizing into similar themes, narrating by comparing and contrasting data, interpreting, and drawing conclusions. Four main conclusions are drawn from this study. First, the revitalization of AIS as IAIN Kudus paradigm is essential and strategic following the institutional transformation for earlier paradigm, transformative Islam, was regarded ineffective guiding IAIN Kudus for future development. On the other hand, AIS paradigm, previously failed to be internalized due to unfavored political dynamics, is more potential bearing science and college development paradigm. Second, conceptual-theoretically, AIS is a paradigm that pinpoints practice (applied) aspect of Islamic sciences which makes AIS focuses on two scientific projects, science production and science application, and makes IAIN Kudus distinct. The two projects (theoretical and practical) make Applied Islamic Sciences paradigm has the potency to bridge between market oriented and humanism of a college. To make it easy, AIS implementation is formulated into 3 concepts of value, namely Humanity, Productivity, and Applicability. Third, the IAIN Kudus academic community responses to AIS paradigm are presented in various forms. Academic responses in the form of books and of papers published in journals (still limited in number), verbal responses in group discussion forums (on how difficult it is to understand AIS paradigm concept), and AIS implementation responses through tridarma perguruan tinggi are among others. However, the implementation of AIS through tridarma perguruan tinggi is uneasy due to the absence of standard indicators and measurements to evaluate the AIS paradigm concept-based activities. Fourth, IAIN Kudus owns potencies to maintain its existence. Social capital and the network, symbolic capital and the honored heritage, cultural capital and the applied Islam basis competence, and internalized structures derived from institution’s core values are the institute’s assets to convert IAIN Kudus to PTKIN (State Islamic Religious College) that excellently develops Applied Islamic Sciences. Unfortunately, IAIN Kudus has to do several adjustments coping with the opportunities and challenges in the industrial revolution 4.0 era.
