Abstract

The easier access to information makes parents worry about their children morals. It actually provides good opportunities for their knowledge, but a lousy impact can affect their character. According to Al Zarnuji and John Locke character can be formed by imitating what children often see, or repeated habits can influence their behaviour. This research aimed to determine: (1) the thought construction of children's character education according to Al Zarnuji and John Locke, and (2) The relevance of the thoughts of the figures to the character education of children in Indonesia during the pandemic. This research uses Thomas Lickona's theory of character education and Ibn Miskawaih's theory of moral education, According to Lickona, a good character must contain three morals, namely moral knowing, moral feeling and moral actuating. Ibn Miskawaih's theory of moral education focuses on directing human attitudes to be good. This type of research is Library Research with a qualitative descriptive. The primary data of this research are the book Ta'lim Al-Muta'allim by Al Zarnuji and the book Some Thoughts Concerning Education by John Locke. Data collection techniques use documentation, and data analysis use content analysis. The thought construction of children's character education, according to Al Zarnuji, the basic goal is achieving taqwa to Allah Sub-anahu Wa Ta'ala, (religion) and making excellent and civilized human beings, as well as religious character values such as repentance, asceticism, patience, tawakkal, tawadhu' and wara'. Al Zarnuji's character education methods are giving advice, reminding each other, mental formation through intention, wara', istifadhoh, tawakkal, and exemplary or uswah methods. According to John Locke, the thought construction of children's character education consists of 3 stages; the first is the development of a healthy body in children, such as dealing with the weather, choosing clothes, eating good food, regulating good sleep, and how to prevent disease. Second, giving children a healthy mind and spirit, such as giving fear, giving equality, and giving freedom. Third, the children's character influence development by repeating good habits, giving good examples, giving what they want as long as the desire is good and letting them learn in their way. Al Zarnuji's thoughts on the value of religious character are relevant to teach children during the pandemic; in covid 19 disasters, we must constantly introspect and repent for sins committed. The relevance of John Locke's thinking is like the stages of forming a child's character that begins with a healthy body because, during this pandemic, health is significant. Because in a healthy body, it is easy to build the mind and soul to form correctly. The character education method for the two figures' children is also relevant with the character education of children during this pandemic. These results can use as a reference for teachers and parents in forming a good character for students and providing solutions about the morals of children who are not good.
