Abstract

Research on corncob activated carbon as an additional material for ceramic filter membranes in reducing the value of COD, phosphate, and surfactant in laundry wastewater. It is known that corn cob is a natural material that can be used as a manufacture of activated carbon because it has a high carbon content and low ash content so that it has a higher absorption capacity. This study aims to determine the effect of corncob activated carbon activated using H3PO4 on ceramic filter membranes on membrane porosity and to analyze the ability of corncob activated carbon to decrease COD, phosphate, and surfactant values in laundry wastewater. The ceramic filter membrane used is made of clay and the variation in the number of additions of corncob activated carbon is 0; 5; 10; 15; 20; and 25 g. Corn cobs are converted into activated charcoal by a dehydration process, a carbonization process, and an activation process. The tests carried out include the ash content test, porosity test, COD, phosphate and surfactant tests. The results showed that activated carbon of corn cobs activated by H3PO4 had a lower ash content of 2.974% compared to corn cobs without activation with an ash content of 5.625%. The results of the porosity test showed that the more corncob activated carbon was added, the greater the porosity of the ceramic filter membrane. The optimum composition was obtained on a ceramic filter membrane with the addition of 20 g of corncob activated carbon, the most optimum with a decrease in COD and surfactant values of 94.55% and 98.13%; and the addition of 15 g of corncob activated carbon with a decrease in phosphate of 91.25%. Based on this research, it can be concluded that corn cobs can be used as additives for making ceramic filter membranes in reducing the value of COD, phosphate, and laundry wastewater surfactants.
