Abstract

Research on the application of activated coconut shells as ceramic membrane additives to lower the levels of remazol red in batik liquid waste has been conducted. This study aims to analyze the ability of phosphoric acid as a coconut shell carbon aktivator, correlate the variation in carbon mass of activated coconut shells as additives to ceramic membrane porosity, and analyze the porosity of ceramic membranes in lowering remazol red levels in batik liquid waste. The ceramic membrane used is made from clay and carbon additives of activated coconut shells that vary (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 grams) using 2,5% phosphoric acid 2,5% as an activator. Research methods included ash level testing using authoring and breeding methods, ceramic membrane porosity test using immersion method, remazol red level test using filtration method, COD value test, and ceramic membrane characterization using SEM-EDX. The results showed phosphoric acid can cause the metal to corrode and lower the carbon ash levels of activated coconut shells with lower values and meet the quality requirements of SNI 06-3730-1995. Porosity and the growing surface area of ceramic membranes tend to be able to reduce remazol red levels by obtaining the optimum composition of ceramic membranes with additives of 5 grams of activated coconut shell carbon able to reduce remazol red levels by 83,34% dan waste COD valye by 99,83%. Based on this research it can be concluded that coconut shells can be used as additives to the manufacture of ceramic membranes to lower remazol red levels and the COD value of batik liquid waste.
