Abstract

The fundamental of this research is about symbols and identities. And the context Dayak Ngaju in Central Kalimantan and the symbol of Batang Garing are seen as a form of social process in it. The reality of marginalization encourages Dayak Ngaju people to present cultural symbols, one of them is the Batang Garing symbol. In addition, the reproduction of Batang Garing is also inseparable from the ecological problems in it. The ecology crisis in Kalimantan, especially Central Kalimantan, is in contrast to the meaning of the symbol itself. Dayak Ngaju people are often attached to their identity as people who are friendly with nature. The cultural symbol of Batang Garing in its meaning contains sacred values for the Dayak Ngaju people who are considered to influence their ecological actions. However, what happens is that the gap between the ecological meaning of the Batang Garing with the reality of the destruction of nature. It is also shows that the meaning of the symbol is also determined by the formations of values that are accommodated by interested groups. Ethnicity is one of the value formations of it. The discourse of the Ngaju Dayak ethnicity is also confronted with Hindu Kaharingan, Islam and Christianity. The dynamics of the interaction of the three religions in the politics of ethnicity that binds the Ngaju Dayak identity. Therefore, this study also attempts to elaborate on the identity of the Ngaju Dayak people whose way of thinking and acting is always contextual in responding to social problems, especially ecological problems in Central Kalimantan. The perspective of social anthropology is a big idea in providing theoretical ideas for this research. In addition, power relations show how culture is ultimately more dynamic and fluid. This happens because power relations tend to build domineering and subordinate relationships. Regarding the understanding of symbolic reality, based on the sociological theory of Peter L Berger, it can be said that the Batang Garing symbol is a form of objectification of the reality of the identity of the Dayak community. And reality becomes possible because of the objectification. When the existence of Batang Garing is declared by the subjectivity of past transcendental experiences, it does not mean that the Dayak community today is unable to construct the subjective intentions of the people in the past. Berger argues about the eternal power of objectification of Batang Garing. The method used in this descriptive qualitative research data collection is through interviews and reviews of written documents.
