Abstract

This thesis researches how the Networks of Jiou (Local Ulama) and Islamic Hue in South Coast of Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi, in 20th CE. This research is urgent because previous studies of Islam Nusantara, particularly Islamic history in Bolaang Mongondow, less touch discussion of ulama network in local level. Root problems in this research are: 1) How are the characteristics of networks of jiou? 2) How far influence of jiou networks toward Islamic hue in south coast of Bolaang Mongondow? Its hope, this thesis can explore role (movement) of relation of parson within local degree that is jiou of Bolaang Mongondow. Historical approaches is used to explore roles of jiou in south coast of Bolaang Mongondow in 20th CE, with stages are heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography. In collecting data, researcher does interview, observation, and documentation. Researching is focused for jiou in 20th CE in Desa Pinolosian Kec. Pinolosian, Desa Mataindo Kec. Pinolosian Tengah, dan Desa Motandoi Kec. Pinolosian Timur. The findings explain that jiou is a local ulama tradition of Bolaang Mongondow. Jiou is tied by knot of ulama networks. Directly, the jiou are connected by relations of teacher-student, kinship, and jiou’s authority levels: jiou imam (imang) as leaders and jiou khatib (khatibi) as fellows. And indirectly, the jiou are connected by like-minded local islamic traditions of Bolaang Mongondow. Relations of ulama inside jiou’s network in south coast in 20th CE are not limited within sectional village, except for various areas. People of Bolaang Mongondow is a suni Muslim with practices of Islamic local traditions, and jiou which holds role as leader of Islamic rituals or traditions to have big influence toward Islamic hue. The networks of jiou in south coast in 20th CE play important role within forming and controlling Islamic local traditions. There are harmony within Islamic culture and tradition between interior with south coast of Bolaang Mongondow and to be detected several Gorontalo’s Islamic traditions are (were once) implemented in south coast. It is part of role of jiou networks in 20th CE. The ulama networks of jiou in south coast are interlaced solidly to the inland areas, so it results Islamic hue that are harmony between interior and south coast of Bolaang Mongondow. Several jiou in south coast also have relation with Gorontalo, until it make Islamic local tradition of Gorontalo in south coast of Bolaang Mongondow. The Islamic hue of local tradition in south coast of Bolaang Mongondow is not loose by role of jiou network in 20th CE.
