Abstract

Tsunami modeling using various software is essential to determine the potential for tsunamis in an area with various event scenarios. Community Model Interface for Tsunami (ComMIT) is software that can be used to determine the tsunami wave height, wave arrival time, and inundation area. This study uses ComMIT's default settings to model the tsunami potential in the Provinces of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The study was conducted because these two provinces are at high risk of tsunamis due to the subduction zone and the majority of them have sloping coastal characteristics and are directly opposite the Indian Ocean. This study divides the observation area into seven grids with a total of 145 beaches. The results of the tsunami wave height obtained from this study were 1 beach with wave height < 4 m, 28 beaches with waves 4 to 8 m, 113 beaches with wave height > 8 to 16 m, and 3 beaches with wave heights > 16 s.d. < 32 m. The highest waves were observed at Pamuran Beach (20.9 m) and the lowest waves were observed at Timang Beach (3,079 m). The arrival time of the first wave when it reaches land ranges from 28 to 54 minutes, with the fastest area affected in Paranggupito District (Wonogiri) and the longest in Nusawungu District (Cilacap). Cilacap Regency is the research area with the highest risk of damage in the event of a tsunami because it has a sloping beach shape with minimal vegetation and many residential areas around the affected coast. The areas with the lowest risk of damage are in Gunung Kidul and Wonogiri regencies because they have a steep coast and several river mouths in the area.
