Abstract

A study on the history of Muhammadiyah education in out-ofJava islands is often neglected. Not many studies, to say none, exploring South Sumatra (used to be Palembang Residency) are conducted, In fact, the characteristics of Muhammadiyah education in various places have their own dynamics, especially the influence of local social and political realities in South Sumatra which affect the characteristics of Muhammadiyah education there. With regard to this problem, this study aims to highlight two things, namely: how the development of Muhammadiyah education and the extent to which it plays such an important role in the socio-political dynamics in South Sumatra. This library research used social transformation approach. The research objects were historical facts on Muhammadiyah education development with which social-political dynamics concerns in South Sumatra during 1931-1957 period. The collected data were analyzed using historical analysis and descriptive-interpretative analysis. The results reveal two points. First, the Muhammadiyah education development in South Sumatra was rooted from part of Islamic education development and Muhammadiyah education in Indonesia in a wider sense. The characteristics of Muhammadiyah education in South Sumatra were typical. While it was full of politics in West Sumatra and full of tasawuf (mysticism) purification in Java, education in South Sumatra was more accommodative in nature due to the heterogeneity, socially and culturally, of the people. In the past, South Sumatra was a port area and the center of economic and trading and made the people have acceptant culture and welcomed new comers and even new ideology. Second, Muhammadiyah played an important role in the social political dynamics in two aspects: 1) internal aspect which was more institutional by developing for and in the (a) renewal and modernizing Muhammadiyah education; (b) education transformation encouragement. 2) external aspect which covered at least three points that made Muhammadiyah important in a social dynamics description, namely (a) the integration in the religious nationalist movements, (b) the empowerment of Islamic education system in South Sumatra, and (c) the participation in Islamic political system.
