Abstract

Labeling, which has been attached to the people with disabilities, has made this community considered as a second class society who always get discrimination of their rights. The emergence of disability movement is an effort to answer one of these challenges, the equal rights of people with disabilities which have been neglected. This is a qualitative descriptive field research. The method used in this research is a case study that focuses on two disability movement with the different backgrounds, namely GERKATIN as an organization under the auspices of the government and SIGAB as an independent or non-governmental organization. The theory used in this research is the theory of new social movements. This research wants to see how these two movements are viewed from the perspective of new social movements and their mainstreaming issues of people with disabilities. The results of this research are firstly, these two organizations or movement are categorized as New Social Movements because from an ideological perspective, these two movements both focus on the identity of the disability, trying to reconstruct the disability paradigm that has developed in the society to create equality, there is not a normal-abnormal classification. Both are also trying to make it happen through the issue of accessibility. Then from the aspect of actors or participants, those who are members of these two movements have various different backgrounds. Secondly, in terms of mainstreaming disability issues, SIGAB is much broader in the scope of the issues than GERKATIN.
