Abstract

Marriage tradition of Sasak society in Lombok is mostly known with the term merarik. In practice, there is tendency to bring out the girl silently without the recognition of her parents, which later on is known as stealing (memaling). Memaling for Lombok society initially is one of the cultural custom which is dreamt of by Lombok society particularly by the custom figures. However, it is now different, which this has recently pointing out the change that gives huge influence toward the culture of Sasak society itself. As for the form of change that takes place is that many of Sasak youth today prefers Khitbah practice and leave memaling as first step to begin with in the marriage tradition. Focus of this research is emphasized on two problems, which are, to reveal the reasons of Sasak youth prefers khitbah and leave memaling and to also reveal how the process of khitbah practice applied by Sasak society. This research is descriptive-analitical, by which the collecting of datas is done by observing, interviewing and documenting, this research is field one with sociological-law approach. There are three ways to be used in analyzing datas in sociological law aspect, namely ontological, epistemological and axiological and supported with the theory of Max Weber (social act) and Durkheim regarding law and social change, therefore. The result of this research is concluded that there are three reasons that cause the change of customary process from stealing (memaling) to proposing (khitbah), which is now practiced by Sasak society in Praya District, Central Lombok when committing marriage, they are are religious reason, sociological reason and economic reason. The increase of religious understanding and the economic influence which then can impede the continuity of marriage customary as main factor of the change of marriage practice from memaling to Khitbah in Sasak society in Praya District.
