Abstract

This study aims to explore the process of psychological well being in mothers who have Down syndrome children. Psychological well being is very important for mothers who have children with Down syndrome, so that mothers can provide proper and good care for their children. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Informants in this study were three mothers who had Down syndrome children with the criteria of married women, having Down syndrome children, and mothers still living with their children with Down syndrome. Researchers did not limit the age of mothers and children with Down syndrome to see variations in terms of development. The data collection method used is semi-structured interview and observation. Furthermore, the data were analyzed through the process of data reduction, coding, categorization, and drawing conclusions. The results of the research from the three informants found that there were two themes in the psychological well-being process, the first was the process of accepting children, namely the acceptance of informants, husbands, and families. The second is the learning and growing process which includes: 1. The process of learning and growing in addressing problems, namely: child problems, self problems, environmental problems, and family problems, 2. The efforts made in the process of child development, 3. Child development, and 4. Parenting practices. Factors that influence the Psychological well being process of informants include: 1. Religion, 2. Family support, 3. Environment, 4. Social support, and 5. Economy. There are several similarities and differences in the meaning of having a child with Down syndrome among the three informants, namely: Equality, become a more grateful person. Differences, for informant N children are a gift, more patient, easier to accept, and are required to always improve themselves. To informant K, believe in the greatness of God, is being tested to pass or not with the religious theory that has been studied, become a more accepting person, and as a reminder not to be arrogant. Then on the informant NW, children bring a lot of sustenance and peace, children teach to always be cheerful, be friendly, and respect others, and train to always be patient.
