Abstract

Al-Qur’an Tarjamah Tafsiriyah written by Muhammad Thalib is criticizing the al-Qur’an translation by the Ministry of Religion. His courage to translate the Quran is so unsual. Throughout the history of al-Qur’an translation in Indonesia, there has been no one to criticize the translation of the ministry, the official one. The alternative Muhammad Thalib proposes is worth considering despite the need for in-depth high-and-low study. Muhammad Thalib thinks that the mehode the ministry use is inappropriate for it is literally transaltion method which is likely to bear errors. His courageous act to criticize and make the translation right tickles scientific questions with regard to: first, the governmet institution that prepares the translation was a select team; second, Quran translations of the kind are available, such as the Quran translation by A. Hasan, Mahmud Yunus and Hasbi Ash Shiddeqi. These questions are formulated into three basic questions. First, why did Muhammad Thalib do the translation? Second, what is the position of his work in the Quran translation discourse in Indonesia? Third, how is the ideological construction in his work? A theory of interpretation translation and a theory of literally translation were utilized to seek strengths and weaknesses of Muhammad Thalib’s work, and a theory of ideology translation was used to reveal the ideology within. Why did Muhammad Thalib write interpretation translation? The question is essential for it can reveal the actual motif of writing it and the connection with his criticism of the ministry’s Qur’an translation.That there is a certain ideology being offered by the translators makes the Ministry of Religion’s translation a target of criticism, not the others. Criticizing the ministry’s work will go more viral than studying other similar translations, so the critic’s ideology will receive more public’s attention. What is the position of Muhammad Thalib’s interpretation translation in the history of translation work in Indonesia? His work appears phenomenal. A new genre emerges in Indonesian Quran translation history as literary method is done traditionally. The new genre is full of its own characteristics in spite of the need, as a man-made work, of necessary notes and criticism. How is the ideological construction of the Islamic sharia in the translation? As a new genre in the history of Quran translation in Indonesia, al-Qur’an Tarjamah Tafsiriyah tends to be Islamic sharia application ideology. This can be seen from the fact that translator is so bound to Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia, an organization where he serves as the chairman. The proposed ideology is also seen from the Islamic sharia diction repeatedly found in the translations of surah al- Baqarah:191 and 193 and surah Ali ‘Imran:103 which are not supposed to be translated into Islamic sharia. In addition, Majelis Mujaidin Indonesia is strongly related to Islamic sharia application ideology in Indonesia.
