Abstract
This study aims to examine and analyze the patterns of marital relationships among working student couples, specifically Master of Sharia and Postgraduate students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The phenomenon of marriage among students not only brings new dynamics to academic life but also creates relationship challenges, such as double burdens and long-distance marriages (LDM). This highlights the importance of analyzing how couples build equal and fair relationships, and how they fulfill their rights and obligations in the context of dual roles and geographic mobility. This study employed a qualitative approach with descriptive-analytical methods and the theoretical framework of Qirā’ah Mubādalah, which emphasizes the principle of reciprocity (mubādalah) between men and women in marital relationships. The five student couples interviewed represented diverse backgrounds, in terms of educational status, employment status, and residence. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using a socio-legal approach and a critical interpretation of gender relations. The results indicate that the relationship patterns developed among student couples are strongly influenced by their respective social and structural conditions. The principles of Qirā’ah Mubādalah—such as mu‘āsyarah bil ma‘rūf, musyawarah, tarāḍin, mitsāqan ghalīẓan, and zawāj—can be identified in the household practices of the interviewees, albeit to varying degrees. The relationships they establish tend to be collaborative and adaptive, with flexible role-sharing patterns that are responsive to family needs. These findings demonstrate that despite challenges such as long-distance marriage (LDM) and double burden, student couples are able to establish a just and equitable household model as long as there is a shared awareness of maintaining communication, agreement, and commitment. This research contributes to the development of an understanding of Islamic family law that is responsive to contemporary realities and confirms the relevance of the Qirā’ah Mubādalah approach in building a gender-just, spiritual, and humanistic household.
