Abstract
This research aims to explain the usage of sign language and subtitle in television programs using qualitative descriptive study to deaf students FISHUM UIN SUKA JOGJA. Descriptive qualitative method is used to explain the phenomenon through data gathered from the research subjects which then analyse based on the research questions defined. Data is collected through interviews, observation, and documentation to the Deaf students in the faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities UIN SUKA Yogyakarta. All the data are then decoded and analysed using qualitative descriptive approach. The results shows that the usage of sign language and subtitle in television programs can bridge the information gap happened in the Deaf community. Though the information sent are not fully effective, the usage of sign language interpreters and subtitle in television programs provide an information access to the Deaf community. Cumulative Structure theory is used in the analysis process to better understand the information sent in the form of symbol in the television programs. This study provides information on how should information are created and communicated in a more inclusive method.
