Abstract

Research on the effect of pH on the process of coagulation and adsorption of remazol red dye in batik liquid waste using chitosan as a natural coagulant and humic acid adsorbent has been carried out. The purpose of this study is to explain the effect of acidity of batik liquid waste on the decrease in dye concentration and COD value after the coagulation and adsorption process as well as to find out the most effective method in reducing dye concentration and COD value in the batik wastewater treatment process. The effect of pH is studied based on the specific characteristics of the interacting compounds. Variation in acidity was carried out at pH 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The results showed that the remazol red dye was maximum coagulated by chitosan at pH 2. The decrease in COD at that pH was 69.8%. Optimum remazol red dye adsorbed by humic acid at pH 3. Remazol red dye adsorbed was 39.79% at pH 3. Reduction in COD value at the optimum pH of adsorption 3 was 29.1%. Based on these results it can be concluded that the coagulation method using chitosan is more effective for the waste treatment process compared to the adsorption of humic acid. Percentage decrease in dye concentration and COD value respectively by 100% and 69.8%.
