Abstract

This thesis examines the veil and Islam as symbols and identities of Muslim women. According to Muslim scholars who claim the veil is one part of the form of clothing in the jahiliyyah period used by women, this form of veil clothing is still ongoing until Islamic times. The model of the clothes, the Prophet (SAW) did not question even not to determine as an obligation or as sunnah in the use of veils against women. The purpose of this study is to reveal various variants of the veil that will show the identities of different religious beliefs, as well as how the veil is constructed as a life style between the ideological veil and the sociological veil. This thesis is expected to add material in the discussion about women with a veil according to the life around us and better understand the state of life of women becadar. This form of research is library research, the object in this research is the development of the veil. This research data is obtained through various information in electronic and print media and then processed with a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of this study showed that the use of veils for women had existed in some Arab societies and other countries outside Arabia before islam. The veil that serves as a face covering, including the nose and mouth turned out to be disputed by the scholars, both scholars of interpretation and jurist scholars of fiqh between those who punish mandatory and not mandatory.
