Abstract

This research is about the process of interpersonal communication between caregivers and children with moderate mental retardation in improving self-development skills at the Bina Siwi Orphanage Pajangan Bantul. The formulation of the problem from this research is how to describe the process of interpersonal communication between caregivers and children with moderate mental retardation in improving self-development skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of the interpersonal communication process between caregivers and children with moderate mental retardation. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were caregivers and moderate mentally retarded children. The object of this research is a description of the interpersonal communication process in improving self-development skills. The results of this study indicate that there is communication between caregivers and children with moderate mental retardation. The process that occurs is influenced by the child's mood state. In the process of interpersonal communication in improving self-development skills, caregivers take the actions that are taught and repeat the actions. With this the child will imitate what the child has seen. Children can respond well to encourage children to improve their self-development skills.
