Abstract

Literacy is one of the important foundations for early childhood in developing language skills, critical thinking, and readiness to learn at the next level. Literacy in the early stages is not only related to the ability to recognize letters and words, but also includes the ability to understand meaning, connect symbols with sounds, and express ideas through spoken and written language. Therefore, literacy learning in early childhood must be developed through activities that are fun, concrete, and in accordance with the child's world. However, in reality, literacy activities in some kindergarten institutions are still limited due to the lack of interesting, contextual, and appropriate learning media for children. This condition shows the importance of developing innovative media to help children recognize letters through multisensory experiences, which involve the senses of sight, touch, and hearing simultaneously. This research aims to: (1) develop sandpaper letter media as a means of learning literacy for children aged 4–6 years; (2) to determine the level of media feasibility based on the results of the validation of experts; and (3) measuring the effectiveness of sandy card media in improving children's literacy skills. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with a 4-D development model consisting of four stages, namely Define (define), Design (design), Develop (development), and Disseminate (disseminate). The subjects of the study were 13 children of group B1 at Islamic Plus Mutiara Kindergarten in Bantul. Data was collected through interviews, observations, and validation questionnaires from media experts and subject matter experts. The feasibility test was carried out using the assessment percentage formula, while the effectiveness test used the N-Gain Score with a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design.
