Abstract

Nowadays, consumption activity is a way of marking social position. The objects of consumption have been transformed into a set of classification systems for class, prestige, lifestyle, status, and even people's behavior. This has led to an understanding of consumerism related to the way of life of today's society, which is more concerned with the sign or symbol value of an item or service than the use value of the goods themselves. Likewise, the complexity of consumerism society described in the novel Wa Nasītu Annī Imra'ah is quite interesting as the background for this research. The aim of this research is to identify the form of simulation, to elaborate the concept of simulacra, and to reveal the hyperreality meaning behind the complexity of consumerism society that appear in the novel. This research uses the postmodernism theory of Jean Baudrillard which includes simulation, simulacra, and hyperreality. This research is a qualitative research with postmodernism semiotic approach. The data collection used reading and note-taking techniques and continued with dialectical analysis. The results showed that the form of simulation from the complexity of consumerism society identified in the novel was in household life and political career in Egypt. Through simulation, an image and media take over the role of a reality. Afterwards, the simulacra elements present in the simulation world of the characters include sign manipulation, ideological ambiguity, and social status fetishism. The reality of consumerism society activities that are shown to the public has a meaning that is deliberately hidden to maintain a good name and self-image. Furthermore, through the representation of hyperreality meaning, society is faced with a complexity of images in which various sign exchanges and the creation of new realities occur. The identified images are present in representation of hyperreality meaning in the novel, namely mirage images, camouflage images, and nomad images.
