Abstract

The political crisis hit South Sudan's democratic process which was dominated by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army and the hegemony of the Dinka ethnic group. This is confirmed by the events of the civil war in 2013 which had a significant influence on the direction of democracy in South Sudan. On the other side, the government faced many challenges and obstacles that contributed to the current crisis. The researcher uses Jack Snyder's democracy theory and Michel Foucault's Power Relation Theory to analyze the problems surrounding identity politics and democratization in South Sudan. The research methodologies used in this research are archeology and genealogy. aims to further analyze the motives, meanings and interests behind an event, in other words looking for related and hidden variables. Through the genealogy method, it can be known the cause and effect between the independent variable (political identity politics in South Sudan) and the dependent variable (the direction of democracy and the instability of the South Sudanese government system). The results of this study found that the political crisis that occurred in South Sudan was influenced by several aspects, those are elite propaganda, oil resource disputes, international actor intervention, SPLM/A authorization practices and Dinka ethnic hegemony. Those five aspects are interrelated and become a source of political crisis and complexity in the democratic process as well as a contributing factor to the existence of identity politics in South Sudan.
