Abstract

This study aims to evaluate Google Scholar as an information retrieval tool with the use of natural language use and controlled vocabulary in the field of library science to measure the value of its precision. This is a descriptive research using a quantitative approach. The population in this study is the entire collection of library science documents in the Google Scholar database. Sampling technique used is simple random sampling. The sample of this study was 30 keywords each related to the field of library science in which for natural language keywords derived from the Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science, while for controlled vocabularies taken from the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Data collection are carried out by observation, tests and documentation. Data analysis uses precision formulas, then the average values is searched using the mean formula and the results are interpreted using a scale range. The results of the study obtained in searches with the use of natural languages get precision results of 73.2%, while searches with the use of controlled vocabulary get precision results of 92.7%. Based on the range of interval scales used to interpret data analysis, the average precision value between 50.01% - 75% is categorized as effective, so the evaluation of google scholar as a means of information retrieval reviewed from the precision of natural language use can be said to be effective. While the average that has a precision value between 75.01% - 100% is categorized as very effective, so the evaluation of google scholar as a means of information retrieval reviewed from the precision of controlled vocabulary use can be said to be very effective.
