Abstract

The background of the research is the destruction of the morality of the Indonesian generation. Islamic boarding school is one of the character education institutions that has been proven to produce cadres with good character. The culture applied in boarding schools is expected to be able to shape the character of santri into a moral generation. Reconstruction taken from two Islamic boarding schools is expected to be able to answer the educational needs of pesantren to be more advanced and dynamic to keep up with the global development. The results of the study show that: (1) character education is found in the culture (activities) in pesantren. Four types of pesantren activities are daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. The activity formed santri to have several characters, among others; religious, honest, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creative, independent, democratic, curiosity, national spirit, love of the homeland, respect for achievement, friendly / communicative, love of peace, love of reading, social care and care for the environment. Broadly speaking, activities at the Nurul Ummah Putri Islamic Boarding School and the Women's Muhammadiyah Boarding School have the same strategy in shaping the character of santri namely exemplary, habituation, assignment, lectures and case studies. The difference lies in the technical implementation of the strategy and the material presented to the santri. (2) Based on the two boarding schools, the author reconstructed some of the character education points of the ideal Islamic boarding school consisting of: goals, curriculum, approach, and educational strategies of Islamic boarding schools.
